In de gemeenschappen van de Romaniot in Griekenland werd een grote, gedecoreerde letter Alef van papier als amulet boven het bedje van een pasgeboren jongetje gehangen. Dit amulet diende tegelijkertijd als besnijdeniscertificaat.
